Never Give Up

by LS Murphy

Last night's finale of the World Series resulted in the 11th championship for the St. Louis Cardinals. It also reminded the nation what baseball's playoffs should be like every year.

When the Cardinals made their unbelievable run to get into the postseason, they were written off. The mighty Phillies were destined to take it all with one of the most incredible starting rotations in the Majors.

But the Cardinals wouldn't quit.

The Brewers were going to win their first NLCS against their NL Central rivals. Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun would hit their team into the World Series. Their first in the NL and it would be their first World Series appearance since the 1982 Fall Classic where they lost to the same team that would knock them out this year.

The Cardinals wouldn't quit.

The Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers to get the their second World Series in two years. Winning on the same guts and glory that they did in 2010. Powered by series MVP Nelson Cruz, the Rangers won game six in a decisive matter to face the St. Louis Cardinals.

Two teams that had never met on Missouri soil, that hadn't met since 2004. Two teams with powerful lineups that had no obvious weakness. Two teams with bullpens that had grown accustomed to shutting down their opponents. The match-up was made in baseball heaven.

The Rangers were the favorites to win. They were one strike away on two separate occasions to clinch the organization's first championship.

But the Cardinals wouldn't quit.

Last night, we watched in awe as our Redbirds took the crown, as a homegrown hero lived out his childhood dream. We watched as the impossible became possible.

We watched as baseball reminded us how great it can be.

Congratulations to the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals. You've reminded a nation why we should never give up on our dreams.
