Jimmy Ballgame: It's a GOOD thing

by LS Murphy

Cardinals Nation erupted yesterday when it was announced that the front office made a deal...with Jim Edmonds.

Yeah, we are still waiting on word that Albert is a done deal, but we'll take this.

The minor league deal and invite to spring training spurred a lot of different reactions from fans. Many were excited. Others, well, not so much.

1) No, this isn't 2006 Jimmy Ballgame. That ship has sailed. Keeping that in mind, Edmonds can still contribute off the bench, as he showed last year with the Brewers and the Reds. Will he see much playing time? Probably not.

2) Tony LaRussa likes veterans coming off the bench. Edmonds fits this perfectly. Way better than Randy Winn. Edmonds also has a history with the team and a presence in the clubhouse. These are things the 2010 Cards needed way more than Aaron Miles could provide. Edmonds is a leader and will unify a broken clubhouse.

3) Edmonds has a career .988 fielding percentage. His skill in center is without compare. Rasmus, if he gets his head out of you -know-where, could benefit from Edmonds' knowledge. So could Holliday and even Berkman. This go around, I suspect Edmonds is ready, willing, and more than able to share his knowledge. Maybe he can teach Colby how to throw.

4) Homeruns are king. Baseball is more exciting when someone hits a long ball. People perk up and watch. Edmonds needs 7 to get into the 400 homer club. Who doesn't want to see this happen? And it will be that much sweeter for the fans and for Edmonds when he does it in a Cards uniform.

1) One thing and one thing only: HE STILL HAS TO MAKE THE TEAM.

I, for one, hope to see #15 back for the season. It will be Jim Edmonds' swan song. And there isn't a better place for him to be than St. Louis.
