Spring training has gotten off to a rocky start for the Cardinals. First, we had the Albert Pujols deadline. After a brief lull where the only debate was who would be the sixth starter, the axe fell today on Adam Wainwright. Or, more specifically, his elbow.
It doesn't send the rotation into a total spiral, but it isn't good news. Nobody wants to see a player get injured. Even the ones we hate.
Except for the Cincinnati Reds.
Hall of Fame sportswriter Hal McCoy wrote an article about the reaction in the Reds clubhouse upon hearing news of Wainwright's injury. The first word that came to mind is that this is classless.
When we are kids, the first thing we are taught in any team sport is SPORTSMANSHIP. Yep, we are told to respect other players. Apparently this has been lost on the Cincinnati Reds organization. Here's a little recap for them courtesy Merriam-Webster:
conduct (as in fairness, respect for one's opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming to one participating in a sport
It isn't that difficult of a concept to grasp. Too bad some of the Reds just don't get it.
