Deadline Scheadline

by LS Murphy

Like most of Cardinals Nation, I watched the clock tick down to Albert Pujols' deadline. When zero hour came with no deal, I was not surprised.

When John Mozeliak and Bill DeWitt had their press conference about a lack of contract, (really how many teams do that?), I was saddened by Pujols' refusal of an 8 year, $28 million a year contract.

It's a good deal. Pujols said no.

Where does that leave the St. Louis Cardinals this year?

Same place.

He's still in St. Louis. He's still a Cardinal. And there is still a chance to sign him.

If Pujols and his agent Dan Lozano continue with the media blackout game plan, the ink will already be dried wherever he signs his next contract.

I say don't panic. Don't freak out. Don't get down on Albert for being greedy. Blame the greed on baseball players in general and the Player's Union. Just don't blame Albert for going for the best deal he can get.

At least, not until he signs somewhere else.
