Think, Albert, Think

by LS Murphy

The deadline is fast approaching and Albert Pujols has not hammered out an extension with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The question on everyone’s mind is why?

Well, we just don’t know. Is it a money issue? Is it the length of the contract? Or is there something else that’s keeping the two sides apart?

With the media blackout, it leaves fans of both the Cards and the MLB to speculate. The rumors don’t stop just because neither side is talking.

Does it matter?

Albert Pujols is the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Cardinals are Albert Pujols. Yeah, we’ve got Holliday, Carp, Waino, and Molina, but they don’t encompass the entire team the way the name Pujols does. At the same time, Albert isn’t thought of as Albert without the birds on the bat.

Can anyone really imagine his legacy in Yankee pinstripes or *shiver* even Cubbie blue?

No, not even if he ends his career in another uniform. Albert will always be a Cardinal.

Maybe that’s something he needs to think about. Remember when Ken Griffey Jr. chose the Seattle Mariners over the Atlanta Braves? One reason he went back to where it all began was because Willie Mays told him to think about his legacy.

Albert needs to remember the promises he made to the fans. Yes, saying he wanted to stay a Cardinal for his entire career was a promise, because he can make that happen. He can be like Cliff Lee and sign where he wants to be and not where the money is. He can look around this city and see the effect he has here. Albert needs to think about more than years and money.

Albert needs to think about his legacy.
