Last spring, I was one of many St. Louis Cardinals fans that was excited to see Joe Mather make the club. Unfortunately, Mather's production declined and he was back in Memphis.
Now, he's not even in the Cards system. The Atlanta Braves claimed Mather off wavers Wednesday. It's well-known that Mather has been coveted by the Braves for some time now. Cards fans can take comfort in the fact that he is definitely wanted in Atlanta.
So let's review some of Mather's more colorful Cardinals Moments:
1) The 20 inning game - Joe Mather did what only one other Cardinal had done before: As a position player, he took a pitching loss in the 20 inning games, the first position player to get a decision in 22 years. Joey Bombs threw 38 pitches in two innings and finished with 9.00 ERA. His predecessor, Cardinal Bench coach Jose Oquendo, threw four innings in a game on May 17, 1988 and finished with a 4.50 ERA.
2) WIFFLE BALL - Brendan Ryan may miss Joe the most. The two pranksters played off each other well. My favorite moment is Joe and Brendan playing wiffle ball at Busch Stadium in a video made for FSN-Midwest.
3. THE. BEST. SLIDE: Just watch the video. 'Nuff said.
Joey Bombs, you will be missed. Not just because you're a good ball player, you're just plain old fun to watch.
All the best,
Cardinals Nation
