Mozeliak Misses the Mark

By Mark Ashby Vaughan

Let me see if I have this right – five of seven everyday players batted lower than their career averages while the bullpen has a 3.35 ERA and the bullpen coach gets fired?

That’s right, five regulars struggled this year compared to their past performances and Mark McGwire is still employed. Marty Mason, bullpen coach, is gone.

Player 2010 Career
Molina .262 .269
Pujols .312 .334
Schumaker .265 .301
Ryan .223 .279
Holliday .312 .318

The only two players who did not see a dip in their batting averages were Ryan Ludwick who was traded mid-season and Colby Rasmus who gets his hitting instructions from his father.

John Mozeliak has badly missed at solving the Cardinals performance problems. In fact, he has made a huge step towards worsening the team for 2011. If he’s concerned about organizational structure then he should have made note that LaRussa leans on Dave Duncan who leans on Marty Mason.
