Series Recap Cards v Dbacks

By: J. Owen

Well the stereotype that the Cards cannot sweep anyone remained true in this series, but taking 2 games was a positive nonetheless, considering how the came back in game 1.

We got the pitching matchup we expected both pitchers going deep into the game, but the bullpens were unable to keep the scoring low. Because of 2 errors in the bottom of the ninth, the Cards won in walk off fashion. We will take the win. Randy Winn that is, goes 1 for 4. The cards got 10 hits and recorded no errors. Let’s start an errorless game streak. 1 game. Schumaker gets 2 hits and continues to raise his average and I think he is officially the Cards leadoff hitter, for now. Just a little side note, Tony gets his first ejection of the year.

No trouble in game 2. Wainwright pitched great, as well as the bullpen. Pujols goes yard 2 times, Cards win 8-0. Winn Starts again, 0-2. Errorless game streak improves to 2.

But that brutal 3rd game of the series. Errorless game streak over. Schumaker does get 2 hits in the leadoff spot. Winn gets a day off finally, his old bones needed it. A fifth inning homer by Young pretty much set the pace as the Dbacks never looked back from the lead. Typical Suppan outing, 5+ IP, 3 earned runs.

The Cardinals have 4 outfielders in AAA Memphis batting over .300. Joe Mather, Jon Jay, Allan Craig, Amaury Cazana. I would like to see either Craig or Jay getting this high number of at bats that Winn sees. You can go with power, Craig has 9 homeruns, or speed, Jay has 13 steals.

Cardinals go 13-13 in June. They are a half game back of the Reds. They have 3 series remaining until the break, all against teams under .500. We don’t even see the Reds again until mid-August, I blame that on interleague play. The Reds have it a little tougher, being on the road for their last 3 series, and meeting up with the Phillies for 4 right before the break. Even though the Reds do battle with the Cubs this weekend at Wrigley, I do not think I will be rooting for the Cubs, but then again, they are 10 games under .500. Remind your neighborhood Cubs fan of that.
