Jon Jay. Not the name you would've expected to be the spark of this team. Since making his major league debut in April, Jay has hit for a .367 average. He has been back and forth between St. Louis and Memphis this season but his latest stint has shown the St. Louis Cardinals that he is ready to play at the major league level.
And it would appear Jay's readiness and ability is just the spark that this team needed to get going.
Since returning to the Cardinals just before the All-Star game, Jay's been on fire. In the month of July, he hit .444. with a .778 slugging percentage. Before being called back up to the bigs, he hit .300 in Memphis.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals have a big decision coming up sooner rather than later. Ryan Ludwick is on the mend and may return to the team as early as this weekend. Luddy started a rehab stint last night in Memphis and jacked a homer in his first at bat. When he returns, the question remains "who will be sent back to Memphis?"
Allen Craig, Jon Jay, and Tyler Greene are all possibilities. Since David Freese broke his toe, it's doubtful Greene heads to Memphis. That leaves Jay and Craig. Allen Craig is making it clear he also deserves a shot at staying but he isn't the spark that Jon Jay is.
The Cards are riding a seven game win streak. They have a tough decision to make in the next few days. Jay or Craig? I like Jay. As much as I'd like to keep Craig too, that's not possible. Also, we need to keep in mind that both of these players make for great trade possibilities to shore up that starting rotation.
Just another reason this team is exciting to watch.
