When I woke up this morning, I anticipated with great glee what would happen with the trade deadline coming down to the wire. Little did I anticipate….THIS.
My first reaction to news of Ryan Ludwick going to San Diego was simple. No, not Luddy. It got more emotional as the rumors didn’t dissipate. Then, like a bad dream that comes true…Luddy was gone, destined to spend the remainder of this season sporting the ugly old school uniforms of yellow and brown.
It took me a while to get over the emotional loss. Financially speaking, the deal makes sense in a way. Ludwick stands to make some good moolah in arbitration. Money the Cardinals don’t have to spend with Albert’s impending free agency.
But that’s the only reason it makes any sense at all.
The Cardinals trade one of their most productive offensive bats for a starting pitcher and a prospect. Let’s face reality. The starting rotation of Wainwright, Carpenter, and Garcia is only reason that this team is in first place. Last night, Carp went 8 solid innings and got NO run support. How many times has that happened this season to the back end of the rotation?
Too many to count.
This team needs offense to support its pitchers. Or the season will end sooner rather than later.
