Series Recap Cards v Jays

The Cardinals took care of business in Toronto, taking 2 of the 3 games. We saw Holliday get 6 hits including 2 homeruns in the series opener, as he continues to ride his recent hot hitting streak into Kansas City. We also saw Garcia struggle, but still keep the runs down and the Cards in the game, which seems to be his new style. We then saw a glimpse of Chris Carpenter at the top of his game, something he likes to do in Toronto where the last time he pitched he pitched potentially his most impressive start ever, a complete game 1 hit shutout. The bullpen looked stellar allowing only one run, a homerun allowed by McClellan on Tuesday.

There were some things I didn’t like however. There is nothing I hate more than seeing errors, and Cardinal’s fans have been seeing a lot of them this year, 2 more on Thursday’s loss. There are 3 gold glove winners on this team, as well as great fielders such as Ludwick (really pushing for his first gold glove this year) and Ryan who in years past has shown an excellent display of range and consistency, but this year has been lackluster and committed 10 errors, which is as many as he put up in the last 3 years combined. If the Birds think that they can play this type of defense and compete in the playoffs, they are kidding themselves. Let us take a quick flashback, World Series 2006, need I say more?

Randy Winn got 11 at bats this series. Why? Granted he did end up going 5 for 11, I still don’t understand why Randy Winn is seeing so much playing time. Rasmus is healthy now, and with Ryan Ludwick in a contract year with no guarantees he will be returning, why can’t we get a serious look at John Jay. For the brief time he was up, his batting average was .300. I am an old school kind of guy, who likes to see the same lineup day in and day out, which would obviously boost a great outfield in Holliday, Rasmus and Ludwick, maybe one of the best in the bigs. But Randy Winn?

So the Cards head to Kansas City with a half game lead over the Reds in the central. The only chances you like as good as the Cards sweeping the Royals, is the Reds sweeping the Indians at home in their next series. I know it is early, but this Reds team is serious business and you do not want to start letting games slip with them breathing down your neck. Tonight’s game is going to be a great matchup with Suppan going against Cy Young award winner Zach Greinke. This is Suppan’s most meaningful start in a while, with the division and the I-70 rivalry on the line, and a shaky Hawksworth starting game 2. Hopefull we will see the clutch Suppan of old and the Birds take care of business once again on the road.
