One Series Down...

by LS Murphy

The Cardinals took two out of three in Cincinnati for the opening series of 2010. In these three games, we learned a lot about our soon-to-be World Series Championship team.

1. Yadier Molina is okay. This was a major concern. I personally thought Yadi should take another week off. If anyone listened to me, Yadi wouldn't have his first career grand slam. I guess I can't be right all the time.

2. Brad Penny is ready. Penny's rocky spring made me a little nervous. I felt like we might have Todd Wellemeyer back in a different body. Even though the team lost the game, Penny pitched fantastic. We can take a little comfort in the fact that Duncan, so far, has worked his magic.

3. Jason Motte...What can I say? Motte supposedly learned a new pitch. We didn't see it. All Gomes needed to know when he went to the plate yesterday was that Motte has a wicked fastball. He knew what to look for and he hit it. Jason Motte, I love ya, but maybe you should work on that other pitch in AAA.

4. Carpenter and Wainwright scare other teams. Neither one was at their best but they still managed to win. I swear the Reds were just shaking at the plate.

5. Colby Rasmus can take a walk. Several in fact. This is a good thing. This will help the team win ballgames.

The season is barely underway. The expectations are high. The team is stacked. This is going to be one heck of a season. I look forward to watching it unfold.

  1. I can't wait for this series in Milwaukee, it should be a nice early road test for the team. I see the Brewers as probably our biggest competition in the Central this season. Their pitching is a real question mark and they have some holes in their lineup but that 1 through 4 in the lineup is impressive and if they can find contributions later in the order they could put up a lot of runs this year.
