Lowe v. Carp

by LS Murphy

Will tonight's game between the Cards and the Braves be a pitching duel or a RedBird rout? That depends.

Derek Lowe has a 3-1 record with a 5.24 ERA. He's got 22.1 innings under his belt with 21 hits. That's a hit an inning for those of us disinclined to do the math on our own. Of those hits, he's only given up 3 homers. For the Cards, that might be enough to hand Lowe his 4th win on the season on a shiny silver platter.

Then there is Carp, who has been decidedly un-Carp like so far this season. He's 2-0 in four starts. His ERA is 3.60. For 25 innings pitched, he's given up 21 hits, 5 of those were homers. It's a pretty even match up. Unless the real Carp shows up tonight.

Last night's win proved the Cards can scrap together a win without the long ball. If they manage that again tonight, they may easily hand Lowe his second loss of the year. If they don't manufacture runs, they'll hit the showers in defeat.

The Cards can't afford to sit back and wait for Carp to get it together. We know he will. They need to hit. Not just homers. I said it before and I'll say it again. You can't win a championship on home runs alone.
