DeRosa-We Hardly Knew Ya

by LS Murphy

When the St. Louis Cardinals traded Chris Perez to Cleveland for Mark DeRosa, fans rejoiced. We blogged, commented on news stories, and begged to see DeRosa in a Cardinals uniform for months. Giving up Chris Perez seemed like no big deal.

Then Matt Holliday arrived to equal, if not more, fanfare. DeRosa's time in St. Louis became limited. Even he could see that. Resigning with the Cards would only come after Holliday. And it hasn't happened yet.

Now DeRosa is on his way to another team, in another part of the country. And the Cardinals are poorer for it.

Not only has St. Louis lost Plan B, we've lost a natural leader on the field and in the clubhouse, a versatile player, and an all around good guy. He is everything that St. Louis fans love in their team.

Whether the lack of DeRosa's presence in 2010 will hinder the team remains to be seen. David Freese could earn his spot at the hot corner. Or there could be another deal to fill the spot. There are still deals to be made. Only Mo knows what's going on.

No one in St. Louis can blame DeRosa for taking the deal with the Giants. How much longer could he afford to wait for the Boras/Holliday team to make a decision? How much longer could he sit back, patiently knowing he was only Plan B?

Mark DeRosa will be missed. I, for one, wish him the best with the Giants and will cheer for him when he returns to Busch.
