Lincecum? Really?

by LS Murphy

We knew it would be close. We knew that Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter would split the vote. But we did not know that Tim Lincecum would actually pull out the win for the National League Cy Young award.

Did he pitch well enough to win? Obviously. But was he the best of the three? No. I don't believe so.

Carpenter was by far the better pitcher but his injury at the beginning of the season made it impossible to get to that coveted 200 innings mark. That should not have been an issue. Carpenter was fantastic all season.

Wainwright had a rough beginning. His ERA was high but his run support was higher. As much as I love Waino, getting to 19 wins was a little misleading. He won games he should have lost simply because the bats were hot. Down the stretch, he was almost unbeatable. If he hit 20 wins, would that have made the difference?

Lincecum went 1-3 in September. And the Giants didn't make the playoffs. Yeah, that should've been a factor.

In my opinion, Carpenter should have been the winner. It didn't happen. And it didn't help that he was left off a few ballots either. I'm in no way, shape or form saying Wainwright didn't earn it. Neither am I saying Lincecum didn't pitch a great season. For me, Carpenter was the best of the three. But I don't get a vote.

Look at the bright side Cardinals fans, and there is a bright side. Our beloved team had 2 Cy Young contenders and made the playoffs. I'll take that any day over a winner that didn't make the playoffs. Next season, we could very well have another three way race between the same pitchers. I'll look forward to that.
