New Player in Town

By LS Murphy

On Thursday, October 28th, an announcement was made that will effect the St. Louis landscape. No, Matt Holliday hasn’t signed a deal with the Cardinals…yet. I’m speaking of the resurgence of The Globe-Democrat as an online paper.

The Globe-Democrat competed with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch until October 1986 when the presses stopped for the last time. After 123 years of local and national news, sports, and human interest, the paper could no longer survive in this medium sized market. The world had changed over night. As the media industry revolutionized, a new opportunity emerged to revive the once proud paper online. With the demise of printed newspapers across the country, the new Globe will be welcome competition in this area.

For us sports fans, the Globe will have excellent writers to keep us up to date on everything we crave.

B.J. Rains will produce the Sports Multimedia department. He’ll be our online source for all things St. Louis sports has to offer. He will also write features and game coverage. B.J.’s coverage of the St. Louis Cardinals always provides fans with the best information available in entertaining, well written articles. We can rest assured that it will continue at The Globe-Democrat.

The Sports Editor will be none other than Rob Rains. He will also cover our beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
After a stint writing for USA Today Baseball Weekly, he became a freelance writer and author of several books, including Tony LaRussa: Man on a Mission and his latest James Naismith: The Man Who Invented Basketball.

The Globe-Democrat can only increase and improve the coverage of the St. Louis Cardinals. It’s a win-win situation for fans. We will have more places to go, more information to process, and more opinions to ponder. This can only be a good thing for this city as we wait. And for all of us as we watch the wheeling and dealing before 2010 Spring Training kicks off.

The Globe-Democrat will launch officially on December 8th at http://www.globe-democrat.com/.
