Hope or Goat

By LS Murphy

If the Cardinals lose the National League Division Series to the Dodgers, Matt Holliday will have his “goat” moment. If they take the next three games, that moment could very well be washed away in the champagne.

The Cardinals were supposed to take the series in four games. Now it will have to be five and they will have to come back from a 2 game deficit, something that hasn’t been done in a NLDS. Don’t fret Cardinals fans. There’s still hope. It may only be a glimmer but it is there.

Matt Holliday needs to step up his game. Yes, he hit a homerun in game two. That was great. But he needs to make the Dodgers regret Torre’s decisions to intentionally walk Albert Pujols. Three times this has happened. Holliday is 0-3. Other than the lone homerun, Holliday hasn’t done anything with the bat. In game one, with bases loaded and no outs, he looked at the ball crossing the plate like a little leaguer scared to swing.

We know he can do better.

And so can the rest of this team. They are just miserable with runners in scoring position. Colby Rasmus needs to sit on Saturday. His base running error on Thursday was unacceptable. In the playoffs, you can’t use the excuse “he’s just a rookie”. No, he’s not a rookie. He’s got a full season under his belt. It’s time he’s seen as a professional baseball player because that’s what he is. Ryan Franklin needs to look at the difference between July and October. He needs to shake off Holliday’s error instead of letting it shake him up. There are a variety of things each player needs to look at, including King Albert, to win this series.

The bats need to show up. The strikes need to be nasty. This isn’t the time to screw around. This isn’t the time to look at the baseballs like they are carrying H1N1. It’s time to throw everything they have at the Dodgers.

Shake off the error, boys.
We aren’t done yet
