The Greatest Ligament

By LS Murphy
Albert Pujols and his elbow have been a constant conversation piece every off season for the last several years. During the 2008 Spring training, the talk obviously annoyed Albert. Then he showed everybody he was fine by winning his second National League MVP award. Surgery to repair a nerve in the elbow soon followed.
Albert is poised to win his third NL MVP after this past season where he pushed for the Triple Crown. On Wednesday, October 21, he again goes under the knife. This time to remove bone spurs.
Everyone knows Tommy John (ligament replacement) surgery will be necessary in the near future. Albert knows it, the fans know it, the front office knows it. Literally, everyone. But should it happen now?
I say yes. Do it and get it over with.
The Cardinals can be very competitive in 2010, even if they don’t sign Matt Holliday. It would be more beneficial for the team if Albert misses a few months at the beginning of the season instead of tweaking his elbow and going down in the middle or towards the end of the year.
That elbow is fragile. It needs to be fixed before it screws up an entire season. It needs to be fixed before it risks washing away the dreams of an entire baseball team and city.
