Johnny's Back

John Smoltz made his Cards debut with a terrific performance on the mound.  He threw five shutout innings including 9 strikeouts, 7 of which were consecutive k's.  This may be the arm the Birds have been looking for as the fifth starter.  Going five innings may not sound like a lot, but going five scoreless is.  When is the last time we've heard that from the number five starter.  Smoltz gave the team a chance to win, which is all you can ask from the bottom of the rotation.  With Carp and Wainwright as the anchors of the starting five, they often throw deep into ball games, which allows your fifth starter to only go five and still be a solid outing.  As with Carp and Wainwright, the bullpen should not get worn out as the Cards make their playoff push.  Although Smoltz is starting now, look for him and Kyle Lohse to battle it out for that fourth spot in the rotation for the postseason, with the other one going to the pen.
