The Feud Continues

By LS Murphy

When the Cardinals sent Chris Duncan to Boston for Julio Lugo, there was a collective sigh of relief around Cardinal Nation. We thought that the feud was over between the coaches, fans, and media. Unfortunately, it hasn't ended for Dave Duncan.

Chris Duncan was an crucial part of the 2006 World Series team. No fan and no member of the media will deny him that. But his injuries got the best of him and he was unable to return to form after his last surgery. Tony LaRussa defended him to the end, and then some, but it seems the bridge has been mostly rebuilt with the acquisition of the much desired Matt Holliday.

Dave Duncan isn't over it. Not with the media at least. His absence from last night's game was a first for Cardinal Nation. He declined to elaborate to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch other than referring to "personal reasons". ( While I am a firm believer of privacy and protection for those in the spotlight, it is the reason behind his silence that disturbs me the most. Big Dunc is still mad about Lil Dunc's ouster. As a father, he has every right. As a coach, he has to know that this is the game. Sometimes it gets personal. Sometimes it gets nasty. Jimmy Edmonds and David Eckstein can tell you that.

It's time to get over it and move on. Let's hope Lil Dunc has the coaching success Big Dunc has had. Maybe Dave will understand that it wasn't personal. It was just good business.
