Cards Knuckle their way past Dodgers

Two of the hottest teams in baseball battle it out in the West. The NL Central leading Cardinals take out the NL West leading Dodgers in a great battle. Cy Young candidate Chris Carpenter threw a gem Monday night as the Birds slipped by with a 3-2 victory. Carp threw eight innings giving up only two earned on five hits. He also struck out eight. Toeing the rubber for the loss was knuckleballer Charlie Haeger. Haeger went seven innings and was off to a great start against the Birds. It was not until the fourth inning that the Cards figured him out on a blast by Pujols. The Cards other runs came in the seventh on a hit by pitch to Ryan Ludwick, followed by a two run shot off the bat of Rick Ankiel. Ryan Franklin would come in a close out the ninth to record his 30th save of the year.
With the two teams battling it out in the regular season, it may still be a possible matchup for the postseason. Look for these two teams to become a growing rival in the long haul. Tuesdays matchup features probable pitchers in Mitchell Boggs (1-1) and Chad Billingsley (11-6). Boggs will get another shot after his last outing in which he threw six innings against the Reds. A repeat of six on Tuesday night is all the Birds can ask from Boggs as the other four starters have been so solid as of late. Boggs has an ERA of 3.78. Chad Billingsley on the other side has not thrown in eleven days. He missed his last start with a strained hamstring coming out of the batters box on August 7th. Billingsley's had the Cards number in his last start for the first five innings on July 28th, but struggled in the sixth by giving up six earned. Billingsley's ERA is just a bit lower than Boggs at 3.73. Should be an exciting matchup.
