Cards Continue to Bolster Roster for Postseason with Smoltz

First DeRosa, then Lugo and Holliday, now the St. Louis Cardinals have claimed veteran right-hander John Smoltz from the Boston Red Sox. This probably wasn't a completely unexpected move considering the Cards have had their eyes on Smoltz, but it is still no doubt exciting for fans as St. Louis continues to make key additions on their way to the postseason. Smoltz should add some versatility for the bullpen down the stretch, starting games in the rotation during the playoff push and taking some pressure off the starters as a reliever once the Cards get into October. Some might criticize this move because of Smoltz's age, but it's still tough to argue with the postseason experience and options he brings to a Cardinals team that might even be better than the World Series champion 2006 club, at least on paper. It's going to be a lot of fun to see what this team can do into October.
